Methodist Drops Two Matches at Tornado Classic

BREVARD, N.C.  Methodist volleyball competed in a one-day tournament at the Tornado Classic on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Brevard College. The Monarchs faced off against the Huntingdon College Hawks, followed by another non-conference match-up with Bob Jones. Unfortunately, Methodist could not pull out a win and fell short 3-0 to Huntingdon and 3-1 to Bob Jones.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the opening set of Game 1, Methodist took it down to the wire, going extra points before falling to the Hawks.
  • The Monarchs jumped out on a 7-3 lead early in the first set, as Leann Sessoms and Jeanana Fowler tag teamed the kills. A few Methodist mistakes brought Huntingdon back into the game, taking the lead 8-7 before exchanging points throughout the remainder of the set.
  • A service ace tied the set up 24 all with a chance for the Monarchs to take the lead, but a kill and service ace from the Hawks secured set one.
  • The second set saw similar action as both teams exchanged the lead until Huntingdon leaked out on a 4-0 run. The run gave the Hawks enough cushion to take set two, 25-17.
  • The Monarchs did not have enough gas in the tank for set three as Huntingdon set out on their largest lead of the night with a 6-0 run for an 18-8 advantage. The Monarchs only registered two more hits, one from Geneva Barriger and another from Sessoms before dropping set three 25-13.
  • The first set of Game 2 started out strong for the Monarchs, taking a 6-4 lead over the Bruins. Two points later, Methodist experienced a rocky spot during the game as Bob Jones recorded six hits, an ace and caused two errors for the Monarchs to go up 18-8. Methodist registered one more point from a service error before losing 25-9.
  • The Monarchs turned it around in set two as the team collected 13 kills and caused the Bruins seven errors. The set was led by Barriger with six kills, turning up the heat mid-way through the set with three back-to-back kills for a 20-15 lead. Mahala Carter secured the Monarchs set point with an ace for a 25-22 victory to make it 1-1.
  • Methodist battled in set three as the team only fell short 25-19. However, the final set was not in the Monarchs favor, as the Bruins leaked out on another 10-0 run making it tough for Methodist to close the gap.

  • Barriger led the team with 17 kills between both matches, followed by Fowler with 13 and Sessoms with 12.
  • Hannah Hewett completed both matches with 49 assists and led the team with 29 total digs on the day.
  • In Game 1 the Monarchs registered 26 kills to the Hawks 42. In Game 2 Methodist collected only 37 hits to the Bruins' 66 who was led by Emma Riddle and Katherine Hoopes with 16 apiece.

Methodist begins USA South Conference play this week with a mid-week match-up with the William Peace Pacers on Wednesday, September 21 at 7 p.m. in the March F. Riddle Center.
