Second Half Surge by Methodist Leads to a Victory Over Averett

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University men's soccer team used a big second half to come up with a win on Monday evening, in a non-conference match. The Monarchs took down former USA South Athletic Conference opponent Averett University 3-0 at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 45 minutes of the game was relatively quiet as eight total shots, five by the Cougars and three by Methodist, with none on target.
  • Charlie Teachey in the 60th minute broke the scoreless tie. Hudson Zeisman gained possession, after a long cross, before passing it off to Teachey. Teachey then ran five steps toward the middle followed by taking his shot from 20 yards out and through the hands of the stretched-out keeper.
  • Six minutes later, Zeisman was able to beat the goalie to his right to find the back of the net in a one-on-one situation to put the Monarchs up 2-0.
  • Matt Brown tallied the final score for Methodist during the 72nd minute. David Ospina passed it off to a sprinting Brown just outside of the box. Brown took two more steps before knocking the ball in the corner of the goal.
NUMBERS
  • Even though Averett finished the contest with more shots than the Monarchs, 12-10. Methodist was able to register more shots on goal, 5-1.
  • Freshman Matthew Walker is off to an excellent start in his rookie campaign between the pipes. With tonight's shutout victory, Walker has a 3-0-1 record with three shutouts.
