Monarchs Enjoy Success at Women's Tennis ITAs

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.  Five members of the Methodist women's tennis team competed at the ITA (International Tennis Association) South Regional Championship this weekend, participating in singles and doubles matches.
 
 
FRIDAY RESULTS
  • Collecting Methodist's only win in the main singles bracket, freshman Emma Hulicki cruised to victory with sets of 6-3 and 6-0. In her second match, Hulicki fell to Emory's Iris Berman, who won the sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
  • Senior Toni Laney suffered a narrow loss to Rhodes' Meher Mishra in the main singles bracket, losing the first set by a score of 6-3, winning the second set by a score of 7-5, then finally falling in the tiebreaker, 10-6. Facing Oglethorpe's Forster in the consolation bracket, Laney lost the first set 6-3, but then bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second set and a 10-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
  • Also In the main singles bracket, freshman Annabelle Subirats fell to Sewanee's Brooke Despriet, with sets of 6-1 and 6-0. In the consolation bracket, Subirats was defeated by Rhodes' Cami Lowry (6-1, 6-2).
  • Freshman Caitlin Tihanovich fell to Emory's Alessia Martinez in the main singles bracket, dropping both sets, 6-1 each. In the consolation bracket, Tihanovich lost in the first round to Centre's Grace Williams (6-3, 6-4).
  • In the main doubles bracket, Subirats and Tihanovich were defeated by Emory's Alyssa Margolin and Eliza McPherron (8-0). In the consolation bracket, they fell in their first match to the Centre duo of Herring and Williams by a score of 8-1.
  • Laney and Hulicki played a close match against N.C. Wesleyan's Mendoza and Selimovic, falling 8-7 (6) in the main doubles bracket. In the consolation bracket, they took care of business, first knocking out the Mejia/Craig duo from Berry (8-4).
  • In the purple singles bracket, Veva Willocks advanced due to withdraw in the first round, then defeated Berry's Olivia Walton with two 6-3 sets.
 
SATURDAY RESULTS
  • Advancing in the main singles consolation bracket, Laney defeated Birmingham-Southern's Valdez with set wins of 6-1 and 6-4. She then was victorious over Centre's Trinh in her final match.
  • Still rolling through the main doubles consolation bracket, Laney and Hulicki defeated Mishra and Baba from Rhodes (8-4), then took down Oglethorpe's duo of Foster and Ali (8-2) to complete their doubles run.
  • In the purple singles bracket, Willocks took down Covenant's Macy Matson in an incredibly close match. Despite losing the first set 7-6, Willocks won the second set 7-6 and then earned an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker. In her final match of the bracket, Willocks defeated N.C. Wesleyan's Solomiia Badii with sets of 6-3 and 6-1.
