Monarchs Narrowly Fall to Greensboro in Five Sets

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Despite winning the first two sets of Saturday's match at Greensboro College, the Methodist women's volleyball team came up short of victory in a 3-2 loss to the Pride. The Monarchs had previously won four-straight USA South matches.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Greensboro def. Methodist, 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 25-17, 25-18, 16-14)
Records: Methodist 14-7 (9-5 USA South), Greensboro 14-9 (10-3)
Location: Hanes Gymnasium; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs captured an early advantage, pulling ahead 7-2 with two kills by Savannah Hovander and two more by Jamie Holton. Though the Pride inched back to within one point, Methodist maintained the lead, finishing off the set with three kills (two by Jeanana Fowler and a final by Aniyah Tate).
  • With the second set tied at 2-2, Holton notched back-to-back-to-back kills to put the Monarchs in front by three. The teams evenly exchanged numerous points, but with Methodist leading 16-15, the Pride took five straight. After Methodist battled back to even the score, Fowler finished the set with a kill and a block on the final two points.
  • The Pride took control in the third set, earning a 12-6 advantage. Methodist worked back to within three points, but Greensboro won six out of seven to widen the gap, now 21-13. The difference was too great for the Monarchs to overcome, as they earned more points from Greensboro attack errors (9) than Methodist kills (7).
  • Hovander and Tate earned Methodist's first four points of the fourth set, keeping pace with the Pride. Greensboro won four points in a row to take a 9-5 lead, and from there the Pride never relinquished their lead, extending the score to 17-11 after another four-point streak. The Monarchs continued to fight, dropping the set by seven points.
  • Methodist won the first point of the fifth set thanks to a kill by Hovander. Up 3-2, Methodist gained two more points with consecutive services aces by Blake O'Brien. The Monarchs continued to ride the momentum, as a kill by Fowler and two errors by Greensboro put Methodist up 11-6. Suddenly, the momentum shifted as the Pride won six out of seven to tie the score. Methodist won two of the next three, putting the Monarchs one point away from victory, but the Pride evened the score once more, then took two final points to swipe the win.
