Late Scores Lift Monarchs Over Tornados

BREVARD, N.C.  After having no success in scoring across the first 80 minutes of Saturday's match versus Brevard, the Methodist men's soccer team recorded two goals in the final 10 minutes, erasing a one-goal deficit to defeat the Tornados 2-1. The Monarchs have sole possession of first place in the conference standings with just one regular-season match remaining.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist defeats Brevard, 2-1
Records: Methodist 9-3-2 (5-1-0 USA South); Brevard 5-8-2 (3-2-1)
Location: Ives-Lemel Field; Brevard, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a save on both ends of the field, the Tornados were first to strike, finding the back of the net in the 18th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Methodist's Kaleb Thomas attempted a penalty kick in the 36th minute but was unable to capitalize as the Brevard goalkeeper made his second save of the match.
  • With time winding down, Garrett Panos headed the ball in for the first score of his collegiate career, which came inside the 80' mark off an assist by Christopher Shoffler.
  • In the 85th minute, a shot by Steven Floyd was saved by the Brevard keeper but not secured. Casey Atwell swooped in to finish the job, scoring a goal that also earned Floyd an assist.
  • With under three minutes to play, Methodist goalkeeper Trey Gohr made a final save that allowed the Monarchs to hold onto victory.
NUMBERS
  • This is Methodist's second-straight come-from-behind win. The team had not previously recorded such a win this season.
  • The Monarchs have now conceded just three goals through six conference games.
  • Methodist played its usual stingy defense, allowing Brevard just nine shots with only five on goal. The Monarchs were held to four shots in the first half, but 11 shots in the second half provided just enough opportunities to earn the win.
