Monarchs Claim 3-1 Victory Over the Battling Bishops

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University volleyball hosted North Carolina Wesleyan University in a USA South Athletic Conference contest on Tuesday night. After some close sets, the Monarchs prevailed in picking up a 3-1 match victory over the Battling Bishops inside the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23)
Records: Methodist 10-5 (5-3 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 4-13 (2-7)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A dominate first set by Methodist started off with the Monarchs registering the first six points of the game. N.C. Wesleyan looked to have gotten back into the set following a kill by Grace Bestler, to make the score 11-6, but a Jamie Holton kill sparked a 9-1 run by Methodist to take a commanding 20-7 advantage. The duo of Holton and Savannah Hovander combined for the final five Monarch points to finish off the set.
  • The second set began with both squads matching point-for-point until Methodist scored ten of the next 11 points to make it 14-5. Scoring the next five consecutive points were the Battling Bishops to cut the deficit down to just four points. N.C. Wesleyan eventually turned the tables by going on its own 9-1 run, 22-18. The Monarchs got as close as two-points to the Battling Bishops advantage but were unable to take over.
  • In the third set, N.C. Wesleyan mimicked what Methodist did back in set one by recording the first six points. Even though the Battling Bishops were up big to start the set, the Monarchs managed to tie the game, 8-8, following a number of mistakes by N.C. Wesleyan. A six-point swing by the Battling Bishops gave the appearance that the set was turning in their favor once more but then a 10-2 scoring run by Methodist changed the course of the set and led to the Monarchs taking the set 25-21.
  • Similar to the last set, game four started out with N.C. Wesleyan taking a 6-1 advantage. Methodist would claw back into the set to where the team was only trailing by one point, 11-10, but the Battling Bishops then strung together some points to put them back up by five, 20-15. A key timeout by the Monarchs allowed them to settle down some before they began their final push. That led Methodist to outscore N.C. Wesleyan 10-3 over the last 13 points to capture the match.
