Monarchs Fall to Knights in Five Sets

BUENA VISTA, Va.  In a close match versus the Knights of Southern Virginia, the Methodist volleyball team came up just short, falling three sets to two. The Monarchs won the first and third sets, but were unable to secure an overall match victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 15-5)
Records: Methodist 10-6 (5-4 USA South), Southern Virginia 9-12 (6-3)
Location: Knight Arena; Buena Vista, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist captured an early 7-1 advantage that included two points off of Savannah Hovander kills and another thanks to a service ace by Aniyah Tate. The Knights clawed back to within one (14-13) before the Monarchs earned four straight points to protect their lead. Up 19-17 shortly thereafter, Methodist took four more points consecutively (three due to SVU errors and one on an ace by Jamie Holton) to push the score to 23-17. Southern Virginia won seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 24-24 before the Monarchs clinched the final two points needed to win the set.
  • After a four-point streak for the Monarchs to begin the second set, the tide shifted for the Knights, who claimed 11 of the next 13 points to take an 11-6 lead. Methodist fought back but never retook the lead, dropping the set 25-18.
  • Methodist won the first two points of the third set, including a point off a service ace by Hannah Hewett. The Knights tied the score twice but never took the lead. With a five-point swing involving two blocks and a Holton kill, the Monarchs pushed their lead to seven points with a score of 19-12, which proved to be enough cushion to help Methodist take the third set.
  • The fourth set did not start well for Methodist as the Knights of SVU sprung to a 7-0 lead, which turned into 11-2. The Monarchs inched back to within five, making the score 15-10, but a five-point streak by the Knights pushed the score to 20-10. Methodist got back to within five but was unable to win the fourth set.
  • The Knights held all the momentum entering the fifth set and let it be known. Though Methodist earned the first three points, Southern Virginia took 15 of the next 17 to swiftly seal their win.
MORE TO IT
  • Jeanana Fowler led the Methodist attack with ten kills, while Blake O'Brien recorded a match-high 33 digs.
  • The Knights recorded more kills than the Monarchs in all five sets, but the Monarchs capitalized on SVU's 33 errors to win two sets.
