Freshmen Score Twice as Monarchs Shutout Pfeiffer

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Earning their fifth consecutive shutout win, the Methodist men's soccer team defeated the Pfeiffer Falcons by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night. The freshman duo of Steven Floyd and Joshua Mott recorded the two goals for the Monarchs, who now hold a 2-0 record in conference play.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist defeats Pfeiffer, 2-0
Records: Methodist 6-2-2 (2-0-0 USA South); Pfeiffer 3-6-1 (0-3-0)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs applied pressure early, with Hudson Zeisman taking a shot in the sixth minute that hit the post. It was one of five shots that Methodist attempted in the first 20 minutes, while Pfeiffer recorded none.
  • In the 23rd minute, Floyd booted in the first goal of the match following a Methodist corner kick. Casey Atwell was credited with an assist.
  • Mott extended Methodist's lead just after the 30' mark, moving past a Pfeiffer defender on his way in for the score.
  • The Monarch defense remained steady, blocking numerous shots during the remainder of the first half, without allowing a shot on goal. Methodist was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the second half, again finding the frame of the goal on one shot, but the defense held true to finish the shutout.
NUMBERS
  • Freshman goalkeeper Trey Gohr recorded three saves – all within the first ten minutes of the second half – to improve his goals-allowed average to .17 per match. He's recorded 19 saves and conceded just one score across seven matches.
  • Steven Floyd's goal is his fourth on the season (a team high), and it's his third game-winning goal (also a team high).
  • Methodist has notched five straight shutouts and seven on the season. The program record for team shutouts in a season is 12 (1990), which included an eight-game shutout streak.
