ROME, Ga. With the USA South Athletic Conference's release of its 2023 men's soccer all-conference honorees on Friday, the Methodist men's soccer team received a league-high seven awards. Of those seven include Coach of the Year
Justin Terranova and Goalkeeper of the Year
Trey Gohr.
For the first time in his over 20 years as head coach of the Monarchs, Terranova was voted Coach of the Year by his USA South counterparts. After Methodist was picked fourth in the league's preseason poll, Terranova guided the Monarchs to a 6-1 conference record – good enough to claim the regular season title for the first time since 2013. With 10 wins on the season, Methodist's winning percentage of .688 was the team's best mark since 2015.
Throughout the season, Terranova was assisted by
Evan Burgos,
Kenny Perkinson and
Daniel Magen. Together, the staff coached six all-conference players.
Gohr, a freshman, earned Goalkeeper of the Year status after conceding just four goals during the regular season. He recorded five solo shutouts while contributing to two more, accumulating a record of 9-1-2 during his time in goal. He also recorded a league-best goals-allowed average of .37 during the regular season while making 34 saves in those 12 matches.
Making the All-Conference First Team along with Gohr were junior midfielder
Casey Atwell and junior defender
Miller Davis.
Atwell appeared in 13 games, making ten starts. He recorded a career-best five goals on the season (all of which came against conference opponents) while also adding one assist.
On defense, Davis played in all 16 matches for the Monarchs, making 14 starts. He was a part of the backline that conceded no more than one goal to any conference opponent during the regular season, and he also notched one assist on the season.
Methodist had three players named to the All-Conference Second Team in sophomore midfielder
Matthew Manzano, senior forward
Christopher Shoffler and senior forward
Hudson Zeisman.
Manzano played in all 16 games for Methodist with 14 starts, and he scored the first goal of his career to help the Monarchs take down N.C. Wesleyan.
Shoffler, a captain for the Monarchs, started all 14 matches that he played in, contributing three goals and tying for the team high in assists with six. He took just seven shots all season but placed five on goal and snuck three past the opposing keepers. His shot-on-goal percentage of .714 was complemented by the fact that two of his scores were game-winning goals.
Zeisman, also a captain, was one of three players to start all 16 matches for the Monarchs this season. Just like Shoffler, Zeisman scored three times while assisting on six scores. He attempted 23 shots, placing 12 on goal. He brought incredible strength to Methodist throw-ins and lightning speed to the offensive attack.
Finally, representing the Monarchs on the league's All-Sportsmanship team is sophomore
Harrison Broome.
