FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist baseball team emerged victorious on Sunday with a win over the visiting Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins in the final game of the Diamond Invitational. The Monarchs scored three runs and held the visitors to two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gavin Wheeler stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and delivered a no-doubt homer over the left field wall for the first run of the ballgame.
- The Marlins evened the score in the top of the third, then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Rob Wilkerson tripled to right center field and was brought home by Wesley Hall to tie the game at 2-2.
- The tie was broken in the bottom of the seventh when Hall batted in another runner, this time Jacob Austin, who had singled up the middle and then stole second base.
- Anthony Sarbanes pitched a scoreless eighth inning, followed by Chase Carroll, who faced just three batters and pitched a scoreless ninth.

- Austin Skipper went a full seven innings on the mound for the Monarchs, allowing just two runs to score and striking out five batters on his way to earning the win.
