Monarchs Opened Up Their Methodist Baseball Invitational With a Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist baseball team hosted Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a non-conference doubleheader for the start of the Methodist Baseball Invitational on Friday afternoon. Following a convincing 9-2 win in Game 1 by the Monarchs, the Engineers made things interesting during the second game but Methodist still pulled out the victory by a score of 11-8 at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. MIT, 9-2; Methodist def. MIT, 11-8
Records: Methodist 6-0, MIT 0-2
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wesley Hall recorded the first RBI of Game 1 with his sacrifice fly, in the opening frame, to put the Monarchs up 1-0. It was not long though before MIT tied the game, in the top of the second, with an RBI single by Tyler Godfrey.
  • Three runs scored in the bottom of the third by Methodist made it 4-1. Two of those runs came off the bat of Gavin Wheeler, with a 2-RBI double. MIT got a run back following a long ball over the left field fence by Zev Moore.
  • The Monarchs put the game out of reach in the seventh with the help of Jacob Austin, Rob Wilkerson, and Hall each registering an RBI. Stancil Bowles joined the RBI frenzy with his own, in the eighth, for the last run of the contest.
  • Game 2 saw Methodist jump out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning but the Engineers matched that in the next half inning to knot it up. The Monarchs would take an 11-2 lead after scoring nine runs in the bottom half of inning number two.
  • Methodist looked to have this game in hand until the fifth inning when MIT scored six runs to make it 11-8. That would the closest the Engineers got to the lead as the Monarchs relief pitchers of Tanner Freeland and Chase Carroll held MIT's offense at bay.
STAT FACTS
  • In the first game, Methodist threw out William St. Leger (six innings) and Kyle Molivas (three innings) against the Engineers. The two combined gave up eight hits and two runs while striking out eight batters.
  • At the plate, Wheeler finished 5 for 8 with four RBIs between both games. Both Hall (4 for 8) and Wilkerson (4 for 7) did excellent with their respective at-bats, each also tallied three RBIs.
UP NEXT
Methodist continues with its Methodist Baseball Invitational on Sunday as the Monarchs play two games that day. The first will be against Nichols College and the next versus DeSales University, scheduled at 1 & 4 PM respectively.
