Methodist Picks Up Two Wins Over No. 25 Piedmont

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist baseball team returned to its winning ways on Saturday, gaining victories in both games of a double-header versus Piedmont University. The 19th-ranked Monarchs beat the 25th-ranked Lions 6-5 in the first game and 11-7 in the second game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Piedmont, 6-5; Methodist def. Piedmont, 11-7
Records: Methodist 13-1, Piedmont 10-5
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions took a sizable lead in Game 1, putting up five runs in the second inning with four hits off of William St. Leger. The Monarchs recorded three runs of their own in the third inning, as a Wesley Hall double brought two runners home, followed by an RBI single by Gavin Wheeler that scored Hall.
  • Methodist continued to chip away at Piedmont's lead in the sixth inning as Wheeler singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, made his way to third on a Caleb Greene single, and crossed home on a wild pitch. In the seventh inning, a sac fly from Hall with the bases loaded allowed Jackson Deal to score from third and tie the game at 5-5.
  • Game 1 would go to a 10th inning, where Chase Carroll took the mound for the Monarchs and faced just three batters on the way to three outs. In the bottom of the inning, Rob Wilkerson set the wheels in motion with a leadoff single. A sacrifice bunt from Hall moved Wilkerson to second base, followed by a single from Wheeler that put Wilkerson on third. To complete the effort, Charles Jordan stepped up to the plate and laid down a well-placed bunt that allowed Wilkerson to slide safely into home for the walk-off victory.
  • Game 2 was a high-scoring affair, starting with a three-run first inning for Methodist. Piedmont matched that with three runs in the third, including a two-run homer. In the fourth inning, the Monarchs regained the lead with a Wilkerson double that scored two.
  • The seventh inning proved to be a meaningful one for Piedmont, as the Lions took the lead back with three runs in the top of the inning for a 6-5 advantage. However, they would do themselves no favors in the bottom of the inning, recording two errors and allowing Methodist to score four runs without any hits.
  • The Monarchs gave up one run in the eighth but scored two more of their own in the bottom of the frame for good measure, coasting to the 11-7 win.
