Monarchs Split Doubleheader With William Peace

CARY, N.C.  The Methodist baseball team traveled to William Peace University on Saturday, falling to the Pacers 9-7 in the first game of a doubleheader before claiming a 17-9 victory in the second game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: William Peace def. Methodist, 9-7; Methodist def. William Peace, 17-9
Records: Methodist 14-3 (USA South 1-1), William Peace 8-9 (1-1)
Location: USA Baseball NTC; Cary, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all Pacers to start Game 1 as William Peace scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the third. With the Monarchs not producing on offense, the Pacers widened the gap ever further, tallying five more runs in the fourth inning for a 9-0 lead.
  • Methodist chipped away, scoring single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. The Monarchs made a valiant ninth-inning comeback attempt. An RBI by Rob Wilkerson made the score 9-4. With the bases loaded and only one out, Gavin Wheeler doubled to score two more. Now with two outs and the bases full again, Caleb Rogers drew a walk to bring in Methodist's seventh run and place the go-ahead run on first base. The Pacers pitched their way out of the jam to prevail.
  • William Peace once again earned a large lead early in Game 2, posting a two-run second inning followed by a four-run third. Down 6-0, Methodist made up some ground in the fifth inning by scoring one run at a time as Jackson Deal, Jacob Austin, Wesley Hall and Wheeler all recorded one RBI apiece.
  • Two runs for the Pacers in the sixth were answered by one run for the Monarchs in the seventh. In the eighth inning, the Monarch's capitalized on mistakes made by the Pacers to take a significant lead. The first three Methodist batters of the inning all reach base on balls before Jacob Austin (facing a new pitcher) drew the fourth-straight walk, scoring a run. Next up was Rob Wilkerson, who was beaned, advancing another runner home.
  • Banks Engle batted next, reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on an error while two runs scored on the play. After intentionally walking Wheeler to load the bases, William Peace unintentionally walked Charles Jordan, scoring another Methodist run. Justin Blunt reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second while two more Monarchs crossed home to go along with another Pacer error in the field.
  • The Pacers changed pitchers for the second time of the inning, striking out one batter before allowing another Methodist run to score on a wild pitch. With Blunt on third, Caleb Greene laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the ninth Methodist run of the inning. The Monarchs scored three additional runs in the ninth inning while the Pacers added just one to their total, giving Methodist the eight-run victory.
