Monarchs Beat Pacers in Ten Inning Showdown

CARY, N.C. The Methodist baseball team earned a thrilling extra-innings victory on Sunday versus William Peace University. The Monarchs once trailed by five runs but tied the game and emerged from the tenth inning with an 11-10 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jackson Deal scored on a balk by the William Peace pitcher and Jacob Austin was batted in by Gavin Wheeler. The Pacers followed than with one run of their own in the first, then two more in the second and another in the third.
  • Down 4-2, Methodist found some more offense in the sixth with a double from Caleb Rogers that scored two runs. The Monarchs scored one more to retake the lead as an error on a later play by the Pacers allowed Rogers to cross home.
  • With a run in the bottom of the sixth, William Peace tied the score at 5-5. Then the Pacers had a massive seventh inning, posting five runs. Chase Carroll entered the game to get Methodist out of the inning. The Monarchs stood tall, and the offense went to work in the eighth, scoring five runs to match the home team.
  • Carroll pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings. In the top of the tenth, Rob Wilkerson drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left field. Carroll pitched a clean tenth inning to seal the win.
 
STAT FACTS
  • Caleb Rogers had three RBI for the Monarchs with two hits and two runs scored.
  • Chase Carroll tossed five strikeouts and allowed just three hits in 3.2 innings of work. He was credited with his second win of the season.
  • The William Peace pitchers cut down on the walks Sunday, walking just three Methodist batters after placing a total of 26 runners on base due to balls in Saturday's two games.
  • This was Methodist's second 10-inning contest of the season. The Monarchs are now 2-0 in games that require extra innings.
 
UP NEXT
The Monarchs travel to Ashland, Virginia next to take on Randolph-Macon College. The teams will play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
