FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Ranked 18th Methodist University baseball squared up with Greensboro College, on Saturday afternoon, in a USA South Athletic Conference clash. A strong pitching performance by William St. Leger led to the Monarchs getting a 5-1 win over the Pride at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Greensboro, 5-1
Records: Methodist 16-4 (3-1 USA South), Greensboro 9-10 (3-1)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the bottom of the first inning, Methodist recorded the first run of the ballgame off a Rob Wilkerson sacrifice fly to bring in Jackson Deal from third.
  • Neither team was able to score again until the Monarchs added two to their total in the fifth. With runners on second & third, a sac fly by Jacob Austin drove in one run before Wilkerson stepped up to the plate and returned a pitch back up the middle to drive in the runner on second.
  • Gavin Wheeler registered his team-leading 20th RBI of the season after getting hit by the pitch with bases loaded, to make it 4-0 in the seventh. The next batter was Hunter Hollman and he sent a ball far enough for Methodist to get another run on a sac fly, third of the game for the Monarchs.
  • The lone Greensboro run, 5-1, came in the eighth as pinch hitter Louis Berini connected with an RBI single to left field.
STAT FACTS
  • Starting and going the distance for Methodist was St. Leger, which is his first complete game in his collegiate career. In nine innings of work, he allowed one run off five hits and struck out seven (matching a career-high) Pride batters while issuing three walks.
  • Austin, Wilkerson, and Caleb Rogers each had two hits in the contest. Wilkerson also had a game-high two RBIs.
