Monarchs Suffer First Loss of Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist baseball team endured its first loss of the season at the hands of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Wednesday evening. The previously undefeated Monarchs were unable to match the offensive production of the Wildcats, falling 6-3.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Johnson & Wales (R.I.) def. Methodist, 6-3
Records: Methodist 11-1, Johnson & Wales (R.I.) 1-3
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • All was well for the Monarchs as Andrew Baur pitched a scoreless first inning, striking out two batters. In the bottom of the inning, it took Methodist just two at-bats to bring home a run. Jackson Deal recorded a leadoff double to right-center field, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and then scored with ease on a Jacob Austin single to left.
  • After a scoreless second inning for both squads, Kyle Molivas relieved Baur. Loading the bases with just one out, Molivas walked in a run, and the Wildcats batted in another to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Ian Bingham took the mound for Methodist to start the fifth inning after no runs were scored by either team in the fourth. He struck out the first two batters he faced before giving up a single in which he also threw the ball over the first baseman's head in a late attempt to out the runner, ultimately allowing the runner to advance to second. The next batter up for Johnson & Wales singled up the middle to score another run. In the sixth, the Wildcats added a fourth run to their total – this time on a solo homerun.
  • Freshman Paul Olive pitched a clean seventh inning with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Brandon Humphreys to begin the eighth. With two outs, Johnson & Wales' Griffin Snyder launched his second solo homer of the night, blasting this ball over the center-field wall.
  • Chase Carroll pitched the ninth inning for Methodist, giving up one unearned run. Down 6-1, the Monarchs exerted all their efforts for a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Blunt singled to center to start the rally, followed by Wesley Hall, who singled to second base. Deal singled up the middle to bring home Blunt and advance Hall to second, leading the Wildcats to change pitchers. Jacob Austin loaded the bases with the team's fourth consecutive single. The Monarchs made the score 6-3 when Gavin Wheeler batted into a fielder's choice, but the spark would burn out there as the next two batters recorded the final two outs of the contest.
MORE STATS
  • Jacob Austin recorded a team-high three hits in five at-bats, while Wesley Hall was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate once he entered the lineup in the seventh inning.
  • The Methodist pitching staff impressively struck out a combined 12 Wildcats, while Methodist batters struck out on just seven occasions.
  • Three runs scored is Methodist's lowest offensive output since a 3-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Feb. 19. Eight hits ties the season low, as the Monarchs also recorded eight hits in their first game of the season against Alma.
