COVINGTON, Va. Missing several graduate-student sluggers once again, Methodist suffered another mid-week loss on Friday, this time at the hands of Southern Virginia University. The Knights slashed the Monarchs 14-7 to take game one of the three-game series.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 14-7
Records: Methodist 24-6 (10-3 USA South), Southern Virginia 10-17 (3-9)
Location: Casey Field; Covington, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning and a half, the Knights put the first run on the board as Kyle Molivas conceded an RBI double. In the top of the third, Caleb Greene tripled to send one runner home, then Gavin Wheeler doubled during the next at-bat to score Greene and give Methodist a 2-1 edge. Southern Virginia wasted no time retaking the lead as the Knights pieced two hits together in the bottom of the third, followed by a third hit that scored the two runners on base.
- With Methodist trailing 3-2, Justin Blunt launched a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score one run, tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. The Knights scored three runs in the next frame to go ahead 6-3, then had a field day in the bottom of the fifth. The Monarchs gave up six runs on six hits to fall behind 12-3.
- With no answer from Methodist in the top of the sixth, Southern Virginia added another run to the total in the bottom of the inning on the team's fourth RBI double of the outing. In the eighth, a couple of Methodist freshmen teamed up to score one run as Cameron Seagroves brought Jackson Kuhn home with a sac fly. That run was answered with one more run by the Knights in the bottom of the eighth.
- Though it was too little too late, the Monarchs tried to rally in the top of the ninth as Jackson Deal started things off with a leadoff walk. With one out, Wheeler walked to give Methodist two baserunners, and they both advanced one base on a wild pitch with Hunter Hollman at the plate. Hollman doubled to right-center field to score two runs, then advanced to third on a Kuhn single. With two outs, Hollman scored on a balk, recording the final run of the day for the Monarchs.
