HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first contest, the Monarchs fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but bounced back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of errors committed by the Knights. In the top of the fifth, Jacob Austin crossed home for one run, then Gavin Wheeler homered to extend Methodist's lead.
  • That lead didn't last long as Southern Virginia scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth – three of which came on a home run. In the top of the seventh, Methodist scored two to tie the game at 7-7 before conceding a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Monarchs amassed five runs in the eighth inning to take a 12-8 lead, then allowed one run in the bottom of the inning. In the ninth, Rob Wilkerson and Wesley Hall contributed back-to-back homers to bring home three runs, then Charles Jordan launched a ball over the fence to score three more. Up 18-9, Methodist gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth before recording the final out.
  • Methodist stayed hot to begin the second game with another six-run inning in the very first frame. Southern Virginia responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, but had a meltdown in the top of the second, surrendering ten runs to Methodist despite the Monarchs recording just four hits.
  • Up 16-3 after two innings, Methodist coasted to victory. Austin scored one run in the fourth, Jackson Deal homered in the fifth for two runs, and Wilkerson homered in the sixth for one run before batting in two more on a single up the middle in the seventh.
