Methodist Tops Leaderboard After First Round of USA South Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  The Methodist men's golf team outpaced the competition on day one of the USA South Athletic Conference Championship, sitting comfortably in first place with a team score of 17-over par. Methodist's Cameron Cappuzzo shot a team-low two-over par, which was good enough to lead all golfers after the first round.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cappuzzo began the day with bogeys on both his second and third hole, but recorded one birdie before the turn. Over the next nine holes, he once again bogeyed twice and birdied once to finish at two-over on the round.
  • Aiden Spampinato sits in fourth place and second among the Monarchs after an up-and-down day. He sank birdies on his third and fourth holes before bogeying the next two, then recording a double bogey on the following hole. On his ninth hole, he took just three strokes on the par-5 to get back to even. With four bogeys in his next nine holes, he finished the round at four-over par.
  • One stroke behind Spampinato, Cooper Hrabak sits tied for fifth after the first day. He made two birdies in his first four holes, but additionally tallied five bogeys over the first nine. He showed improvement over the next nine, only recording two more bogeys.
  • David D'Agostino sits one stroke back from Hrabak, tied for seventh at six-over par. D'Agostino was sitting at even par through nine holes, but recorded four bogeys and one double bogey over the second half of the day.
  • Jonny Lewis also finished six-over par on the day. He too had an up-and-down outing, totaling four bogeys and three double bogeys, but also two birdies and one eagle.

The first Monarch tees off the second round around 9:06 AM on Tuesday.
