STAUNTON, Va. The Methodist men's soccer team picked up a 3-0 win over conference foe Mary Baldwin on Saturday, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 record versus USA South opponents in 2023. The Monarchs are now winners of four straight shutouts, having outscored opponents 11-0 during that span.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist defeats Mary Baldwin, 3-0
Records: Methodist 5-2-2 (1-0-0 USA South); Mary Baldwin 0-10-0 (0-1-0)
Location: SMA Worth Field; Staunton, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the eighth minute of play, Hudson Zeisman connected with fellow captain Christopher Shoffler, who scored on the first shot of the game by either team. The Methodist offense fired off seven more shots during the first half – six of which were on target but saved by the Mary Baldwin goalkeeper.
- It took less than three minutes of action in the second half for the Monarchs to add another goal to their total, as Casey Atwell found the back of the net. After a misfire by the Monarchs in the 52nd minute, Kaleb Thomas inflated Methodist's lead to 3-0 with a score in the 53rd minute. Zeisman was responsible for the feed, earning his second assist on the day.
- While the Mary Baldwin keeper came up with two more saves in the second half, Methodist's Trey Gohr faced just one shot while he was in goal, making the save to keep the Fighting Squirrels scoreless. The Monarch defense was unforgiving, allowing just that one shot throughout the entire contest.
NUMBERS
- 11 shots on goal by the Monarchs tie the season high, which was set during Methodist's previous match against Regent.
- Hudson Zeisman's two assists give him five on the season – just one shy of his career-best six that he totaled in 2022. The multi-assist performance is his second of the season and third of his career.
- This is Methodist's first win over the Fighting Squirrels in Staunton. The Monarchs now hold a 3-2 advantage all-time in the short history between these two teams.
