JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Meredith def. Methodist, 3-1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-14, 25-13)
Records: Methodist 9-5 (4-3 USA South), Meredith 11-5 (5-2)
Location: Weatherspoon Gymnasium; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs looked sharp to start the match, quickly amassing a 7-1 lead with two points thanks to a pair of services aces by Aniyah Tate. The Avenging Angels had their turn next though, scoring eight of the next nine points to boast a 9-8 advantage. Battle ensued, with host Meredith maintaining a close lead all the way to a 23-20 advantage. With the Avenging Angels two points away from laying claim to a win in the first set, the Monarchs found a second wind, taking the next four points to force match point. The teams exchanged point for point all the way to a 26-26 tie, but Methodist was able to finish the comeback with a kill by Savannah Hovander and a set-winning service ace by Carrie Jordan.
  • Hannah Hewett collected assists on the first three points of the second set as Tate earned kills on the first two points and Hovander earned one on the third. The Monarchs turned that 3-0 lead into an 11-7 advantage, but the Meredith squad got hot, rattling off six consecutive points. Methodist momentarily retook the lead which reached 18-17 before the Avenging Angels strung together another six-point streak. With Meredith two points away from winning the set, the Monarchs won the next four points just as they did during the first set, but they had more ground to make up this time. Up 23-22, Meredith claimed the next two points to tie the match at one set apiece.
  • Sets three and four did not see much work in favor of the Monarchs. Methodist's 6-1 lead to start the third set quickly became an 11-7 deficit following a 10-1 run by the Avenging Angels. Fighting from behind, Methodist closed the gap to 15-12, but a six-point swing toward Meredith made the score 21-12. Hovander earned kills on two points for Methodist, but the Monarchs conceded four points to drop the set.
  • After a handful of back-and-forth points in the fourth set, the Avenging Angels tallied another streak of six points – their fifth streak of six points or better during the match – to take a 12-5 lead. At 16-10, Meredith claimed seven of the next eight points to increase their advantage to 12 points (23-11), and they soon clinched the match and set.
MORE TO IT
  • Leading the Monarchs with 11 kills, Jamie Holton fell just one dig shy of a double-double.
  • Carrie Jordan matched her season high of two service aces, while Aniyah Tate (2), Blake O'Brien (1) and Julia Mundy (1) also contributed services aces during the match.
  • This was just the second match of the season where the Monarchs did not win at least two sets. It's the third time that Methodist has lost a match this season despite winning the first set.
