Hannah Hewett Becomes Program's All-Time Assist Leader in Loss to Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  On Tuesday, Methodist University volleyball made the trip out to Salem College for a USA South bout. The Monarchs claimed the opening set but that would be the only one as they suffered a 3-1 loss to the Spirits.

During the second set, graduate student Hannah Hewett recorded her 16th assist of the match. That brought her career assist total to 4,195, becoming the program's All-Time leader. She surpassed Methodist graduate Maggie Harris, Class of 2018, who previously held the record.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Salem def. Methodist, 3–1 (25–18, 15–25, 17–25, 20–25)
Records: Methodist 16–4 (7–3 USA South), Salem 17–4 (8–2)
Location: Athletics Complex; Winston-Salem, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Monarchs jumped out to a 6-3 lead, both teams exchanged the next five points before a Methodist run made the score 13-7, with senior Jamie Holton recording three kills during the run. Salem cut the deficit down to three at one point but Savannah Hovander, three kills, and Carlyn Tanis, two kills, provided a strong finish in the first set for the Monarchs.
  • Methodist once again claimed an early advantage to start the second set, but then some hiccups by the Monarchs swung the momentum of the match in favor of the Spirits. A 9-1 Salem run ballooned the score to an eight-point difference, 16-8, and Methodist was unable to regroup, resulting in the match being tied at 1-1.
  • Salem's offense was clicking to begin the third set and that led to a 5-2 lead. The trio of Jeanana Fowler, Railyn Fowler, and Holton kept the Monarchs within the game and tied the set, 12-12. This was the closest Methodist got to potentially take a lead for the remainder of the set as the Spirits ran away with it down the stretch.
  • The fourth set was a game of runs where as soon as one side took a sizable lead, the other team came right back. Eventually, the two squads would keep trading points before Salem captured the final points necessary to capture the match.
MORE TO IT
  • The Spirits attack was too great for the Monarchs as they held a .301 to .183 advantage.
  • Holton led all hitters with a game-high 18 kills. Hovander (11) and J. Fowler (10) were the other Methodist player to record double-digit kills.
  • For the first time this season, Hewett did not lead the match in assists. She was also kept under her assist per set average of over 11, recording 38 total tonight or 9.5 per set.
