Methodist Drops Homecoming Game to Southern Virginia

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  It was an eventful Saturday as Methodist University celebrated Homecoming 2024. The football game between the Monarchs and Southern Virginia University capped off the festivities. After Methodist took a 17-7 lead into halftime, the Knights kept the Monarchs off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest while scoring two answered touchdowns to claim a 21-17 USA South victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 21-17
Records: Methodist 1-6 (1-4 USA South), Southern Virginia 1-6 (1-4)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern Virginia's lone touchdown in the first half happened on the first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Devin Watson threw a 74-yard TD to his receiver, Cintez Gibson, to record the opening points.
  • On Methodist's first possession of the game, the team marched down to the Knight's 20-yard line before the drive stalled out. This led senior kicker Samuel Andrae and the rest of the field goal unit to go out and attempt a 36-yard field goal. The kick sailed wide left, which resulted in no points for the Monarchs.
  • Andrae was called upon again on Methodist's second drive, and this time, he did give the Monarchs their first points of the ballgame, making a 22-yarder. A couple of big gains on the ground by running backs CJ Fergusson and Sajari Love, respectively 16 and 21 yards, helped Methodist get deep into SVU territory, the four-yard line. Once again, the Knights kept the Monarchs out of the end zone which prompted the field goal try.
  • At the start of the second quarter, Methodist's defense came up with a turnover that would lead to points. Sophomore defensive end Cam'Ron Webster recovered a fumble to give the Monarchs the ball back after junior defensive tackle Tre Willoughby forced the fumble. Three plays later, sophomore quarterback Brennan Brucato ran into the end zone from 29 yards out, which gave Methodist the lead 10-7.
  • Brucato registered a second rushing touchdown right before halftime, with 26 seconds remaining. Beginning on Methodist's 18-yard line, Brucato completed back-to-back 26-yard completions to Love and Mikhail Baldwin to get onto the Knights side of the field. A completed pass to TJ Hart, 17 yards, put the Monarchs inside the 15-yard line of SVU. Following a short run by Ferguson, Brucato kept the ball on an option play and ran two yards into the end zone.
  • Methodist did not possess the ball much in the third quarter, with the total time of possession being under four minutes, 3:37. Also, in the period, Knights running back Tyreeck Hall finished off a 10-play, 35 yards, drive with a two-yard score for the team's second touchdown, cutting the deficit down to three, 17-14.
  • The Monarchs' next chance to add points did not come until there were under ten minutes left in the fourth quarter. With the ball on SVU's nine-yard line, a fumble, an incomplete pass, and a sack backed Methodist to the Knights' 31-yard line. Andrae was sent out to attempt a 48-yard field goal, but the kick was short.
  • On the ensuing SVU drive, Watson threw his second touchdown pass of the game, an 11-yard completion, to Antione Mills to give the Knights a 21-17 advantage.
  • During the final 6:38 of the ballgame, the Monarchs had two opportunities to take the lead back. The first was erased following an inception by CJ Williams of SVU just outside the red zone, the 23-yard line of the Knights. The second was on a goal-line stance, where Methodist's offense was denied from scoring by SVU's defense on three straight plays.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Brucato completed 20 of his 35 passes for a career-high 290 passing yards. He also carried the ball ten times for 63 yards and two rushing TDs, both career-highs.
  • Senior wideout Mikhail Baldwin led all Monarch receivers with five catches for 78 yards, a career-high. Right behind Baldwin was junior Ty Benton, who had a career day with four grabs for 57 yards.
  • Methodist's defense had a couple of players that produced monster days. Junior linebacker Omar Goodwin recorded new career-highs in tackles (13), tackles for loss (4.0), and sacks (2.0). Also registering multiple sacks were classmates Jonathan Adams (2.0) and Willoughby (1.5).
