Maryville Runs Past Methodist

MARYVILLE, Tenn.  Methodist University football traveled to the Volunteer State, Tennessee, to face Maryville College in another USA South game on Saturday. The Monarchs kept the first half of the game close until the last five minutes of quarter two, as the Scots tallied 41 unanswered points and ran away with a 48-6 victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Maryville def. Methodist, 48-6
Records: Methodist 1-7 (1-5 USA South), Maryville 5-1 (4-0)
Location: Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium; Maryville, Tennessee

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maryville began the game with the ball, and it would only take four plays before the first touchdown was recorded. Quarterback Bryson Rollins found his receiver, Stephen Carter Jr., on a 40-yard reception to get the Scots into Methodist territory. On the next play, running back Teddy Orton took the ball and ran 22 yards into the end zone.
  • The remainder of the opening frame saw both teams struggle to move the ball past mid-field.
  • After Maryville began the second quarter with a turnover on downs, the Monarchs had the ball at their 17-yard line. Following three completions to senior KJ Hicklin (17 yards), freshman CJ Ferguson (eight), and sophomore Tim Livingston (11) to get the ball onto the Scots side of the field, Methodist handed the ball off to Ferguson. He ripped off a season-long 37-yard rush before he was taken down at Maryville's 10-yard line. Eventually, sophomore Sajari Love finished the drive with a one-yard plunge for a Monarch touchdown, but the Scots would maintain a one-point lead, 7-6, after blocking the PAT.
  • The ensuing Maryville possession saw the Scots score their second touchdown of the contest. After a pair of Griffin Swinea runs, nine and 15 yards, respectively, got Maryville to midfield, Rollins kept the ball himself and sprinted 46 yards for seven points a couple of plays later.
  • The next 13 Scots points came from two block punts returned for scores. The first occurred at the end of the second quarter, and the other occurred at the start of the third.
  • Midway through the third quarter, a costly Methodist interception resulted in Maryville adding points to its total. The pick happened at the Monarchs 18-yard line and was returned to the six. Swinea was then handed the rock and scored on the next play.
  • The final two scoring plays for the Scots were a 23-yard touchdown connection between Rollins and Zae Richardson and an 18-yard run by Jermaine Abner.
MORE TO IT
  • Sophomore quarterback Brennan Brucato completed 17 of his 29 passes for 110 yards and threw one interception. The wideouts were led by Hicklin and junior Ty Benton, who each finished with 36 receiving yards.
  • Ferguson spearheaded the ground attack with 35 yards on seven carries, averaging five yards per rush.
  • Freshman Tyler Jackson finished the contest with a game-high 11 tackles. Senior Risan Garland also had a career-high nine tackles.
