JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-14)
Records: Methodist 16-2 (7-1 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 2-13 (1-7)
Location: Everett Gymnasium; Rocky Mount, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • N.C. Wesleyan had an early 7-4 lead until Methodist scored the next five points, including three straight kills by Jamie Holton, to take a 9-7 advantage. Just like their name implies, the Battling Bishops did not go away as they kept within two points of the Monarchs down the stretch in the first set. A kill by Carlyn Tanis would put Methodist up by one, 22-21, but then four of the last five points favored N.C. Wesleyan, which secured a set win for the home team.
  • After how the end of the opening game went, the Monarchs mentally clicked the reset button and started set two with a 5-2 lead. The sister tandem of Jeanana Fowler, one kill and one block, and Railyn Fowler, one kill, helped increased the Methodist advantage to five and then the Monarchs took full control of the set following a 7-0 run. The Battling Bishop got back to within six, 19-13, before Methodist recorded the final six points to tie up the overall match at 1-1.
  • The third set saw N.C. Wesleyan regain some of the momentum the team had in the opener by jumping out in front 5-3. That early lead did not last long for the Battling Bishops as the Monarchs won five of the next six points, 8-6. During a Methodist 6-0 run, Savannah Hovander recorded three kills to push her team's advantage to seven. Four more Monarch kills by J. Fowler, along with two kills by Mahala Carter, put this set out of reach for N.C. Wesleyan.
  • The duo of Holton, one kill, and Hovander, two kills, gave Methodist a 3-0 edge to begin the fourth game, but the Battling Bishops were quickly able to cut the deficit down to one, 5-4. The Fowlers reminded N.C. Wesleyan of their presence during a 5-0 Monarch run with Jeanana and Railyn registering three combined kills, respectively, two and one. As the set continued, Methodist utilized two more small runs of four and five points to ice the match.
MORE TO IT
  • The Monarchs had some excellent serves as they recorded 11 service aces as a team. Holton led all Methodist servers with four, matching a career-high.
  • Holton would also be one of three Monarchs to register double-digit kills, with a game-high 15. Both J. Fowler and Hovander each had 13 kills.
  • Four different Methodist player accumulated 10 or more digs in tonight's match with Hannah Hewett leading the way with 26, a season-high.
