VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Taking on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan, the Methodist men's lacrosse team battled to a tight loss on Tuesday, falling 8-5 on the road. The Monarchs went down by three goals in the first quarter and were unable to make up the difference despite a stronger defensive effort across the remaining three quarters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ryan Kavounis put the Monarchs on the board first with an early statement goal just a little over four minutes into the first quarter. From there, the Marlins tallied the next four goals (three scored by Ben Andrews) to finish the quarter ahead 4-1. Virginia Wesleyan's second and third goals each were scored on possessions that immediately followed successful faceoffs.
- The Marlins extended their lead with a fifth-straight goal just two minutes into the second quarter. Two minutes later, Nate Moore connected with Jake Burnette, who added a goal to Methodist's total. Trailing 5-2, the Monarchs conceded one more goal before the break, giving them a 6-2 deficit at halftime.
- Taking 11 shots in the third quarter, the Monarchs put five on goal but came away scoreless in the period. On the other side of the field, Methodist's defense held the Marlins to seven shots – of which just four were on goal. Of those four shots, goalkeeper Gabe Russell allowed only one in for a score.
- The Monarchs faired best offensively during the fourth quarter, putting up 13 shots with nine on goal. Less than a minute into the period, RJ Breeden took advantage of a man-up situation, driving in a goal for the Monarchs. Several minutes later, Andrews of Virginia Wesleyan answered with his fourth goal of the contest, giving the Marlins an 8-3 advantage.
- Methodist found the back of the net twice more – one goal scored by Mark Chatt and another by Breeden – but the Monarchs ran out of time for a comeback.
