Records: Methodist 7-5 (4-1 USA South), Southern Virginia 5-8 (4-1)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern Virginia opened the game by registering the first two goals. The Monarchs then capitalized on a pair of Knight penalties, goals by seniors Nate Moore & Ryan Kavounis, to close out the first quarter.
- A quick second period score by sophomore RJ Breeden put Methodist in front, 3-2, for the first, and only, time in the contest. Southern Virginia recorded the next five goals but then the Monarchs made it 7-6 following a three-score stretch, with Breeden, Mark Chatt, and Kavounis finding the back of the cage. With 14 seconds left until the break, the Knights tallied their 8th goal of game.
- After Southern Virginia scored three more goals to start the third frame, Cy Horner received a feed from Chatt and got the ball past the Knights' goalie for Methodist's seventh score, first of the second half. Two additional goals by Southern Virginia pushed its lead to 13-7.
- In the fourth quarter, the Knights outscored the Monarchs 3-1 as senior Matt Bentz tallied the final Methodist goal.
FAST FACTS
- Breeden and Kavounis were the only Methodist players to have a multiple goal game. Senior Mark Chatt led the Monarchs with four points.
- Methodist senior Jackson Bulkin made a career-high 17 saves in the loss to Southern Virginia.
- The Knights only had three more groundballs than the Monarchs, 40 to 37. Sophomore Kaleb Simpson, of Methodist, finished with six himself, which was tied for game-high.
