Monarchs Nearly Defeat Trinity With Thrilling Second-Half Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas  After more than 75 minutes of scoreless play, the Methodist men's soccer team exchanged second-half goals with Trinity University in route to a 1–1 draw late Sunday night. The Monarchs captured a 1–0 lead in the 77th minute before conceding a goal less than 30 seconds later to the Tigers, who received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Preseason Top-25 poll.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Trinity, 1-1
Records: Methodist 0-1-1, Trinity 0-0-2
Location: McGinlay Field; San Antonio, Texas

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Though there were no goals scored in the first half, Trinity outshined Methodist on offense, firing off 10 shots compared to just one attempt for the Monarchs. Three of those shots by the Tigers were on goal, which Methodist goalkeeper Trey Gohr handled safely.
  • Each team placed just one shot on goal during the first 30 minutes of the second half as defenses on both sides locked down. Then, in the 77th minute, an errant header by the Tigers put the ball in a perfect spot for Steven Floyd, who found himself with just one man to get past — Trinity goalkeeper Joshua Lynch. In a panic, Lynch charged toward Floyd and tipped the sophomore's shot with his gloves to prevent the ball from sailing into the net, but Lynch had come beyond the penalty box. For using his hands outside of his domain, the keeper was immediately issued a red card and the Monarchs were rewarded a free kick.
  • The Tigers now had one less player than Methodist on the field, and backup keeper Omkar Satpathy was unexpectedly thrust into action for Trinity. Casey Atwell lined up to attempt the free kick and arched it over the wall of defenders, into the top left corner of the goal.
  • Methodist's celebration was quickly tempered, as a good pass from right to left by the Tigers led to a goal of their own. Defender Ryan Rivera almost prevented the equalizer as he helped Gohr (who was positioned on the other side of the goal), but the ball ricocheted off his head into the net.
  • The Monarchs saw one more opportunity just before the 80th minute, as Atwell launched another free kick towards the net. This kick was from much further out than the previous one. Methodist got a head on it, but Satpathy made a diving save this time.
