Methodist Fends Off Greensboro for First Win of the Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University football welcomed Greensboro College to Fayetteville on Saturday night, with both teams playing their first USA South Athletic Conference contest. The Monarchs controlled the tempo of the game for most of the time before a blocked punt, which led to a touchdown, shifted the momentum in the Prides' favor. The Methodist defense stood tall though and extinguished the last Greensboro threat to hang onto a 17-14 victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Greensboro, 17-14
Records: Methodist 1-2 (1-0 USA South), Greensboro 0-3 (0-1)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown on their second drive of the ballgame. A poor punt by the Pride set Methodist up on Greensboro's side of the field before a few runs by Sajari Love put the Monarchs inside the 30-yard line. A couple of plays by Methodist quarterback Brennan Brucato would line up his offense at the 12, and then Brucato found Mikhail Baldwin in the back corner of the end zone, on a roll-out right pass play.
  • At the start of the second quarter, another not-so-great Greensboro punt led to more points for the Monarchs. Starting at the Pride's 35-yard line, Love rushed for 15 yards to get Methodist into the red zone, but then the Monarchs offense stalled, moving the ball just four more yards before calling upon Samuel Andrae to attempt a 33-yard field goal. Andrae's kick went right down the middle to increase Methodist's advantage to 10-0.
  • On the next Monarch drive, they failed to find the end zone after being deep in Greensboro's territory with the ball. Andrae was sent out again to kick another field goal, a 29-yard attempt, but this time Methodist got no points as the kick went wide left.
  • Following the missed kick, the Pride went on to score their first points of the game. A 44-yard reception by Coy Davis and a 23-yard rush by Tareek Smith put Greensboro on the Monarch's side of the field before the Pride capped off the drive with a 19-yard connection between Jayden Morrison and Ja'Shawn Harris. This cut Methodist lead down to just three points, 10-7.
  • The Monarchs' offense would score the final points of the first half after their defense got them the ball back. With Greensboro at its own 20-yard line, Methodist linebacker Risan Garland blitzed Morrison from the outside and forced a fumble. Syone Beckford of the Monarchs jumped on the ball and gave his team possession at the 15-yard line. Three plays later, Brucato found Andre Wilson on a seven-yard pass for Methodist's second touchdown.
  • The score remained 17-7 for the next quarter and a half before the Pride's special teams came up with a big play midway through the fourth. The Monarchs were forced to punt the ball away, and as Kenneth Schoene was about to kick it away, Greensboro's Ben Mangungu came sprinting in to block the kick, then proceeded to scope up the ball and run it back for a defensive touchdown.
  • With the score now 17-14, the Pride got the ball back at their 32-yard line with 54 seconds left. A 27-yard pass by De'yon Cannon, who replaced Morrison, to Deaven Hawkins put Greensboro on the Methodist side of the field, but then a pair of incompletions made it fourth down. The Pride had to go for it on fourth and in the process Beckford of the Monarchs came up with a strip sack, with Christian Ellington recovering the fumble for Methodist, to seal the game.
MORE TO IT
  • Greensboro had almost twice as many total offense, 320 to 172, then the Monarchs, with 277 of it coming through the air.
  • Defensively, Methodist was led by Omar Goodwin, who had nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Beckford also had a good game with two tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, and a quarterback hurry.
  • The Monarch defense was shedding blocks and was getting to the ball carriers quickly, as the team registered 16 tackles for loss. This is tied for the second-most TFLs by a Methodist defense in program history and the most since 2012 when the team recorded 17 against N.C. Wesleyan.
UP NEXT
Methodist is on the road for the next two weeks, starting with the team traveling to Georgia to face LaGrange College next Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
