Monarchs Suffer Setback at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.  An 11–game win streak came to an end on Saturday as the Methodist women's volleyball team lost for just the second time this season. After securing a win in the first set, the Monarchs dropped the next three in a loss to Southern Virginia University.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25–17)
Records: Methodist 12-2 (3-1 USA South), Southern Virginia 6-9 (3-1)
Location: Knight Arena; Buena Vista, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a hotly contested start, head coach Eddie Matthews called timeout with his team trailing 16–13. Methodist won the next seven points after talking things over, with kills by Carlyn Tanis, Mahaha Carter and Jeanana Fowler, as well as two blocks by Fowler and Hannah Hewett. The Knights battled back to within one point, but the Monarchs did not relinquish the lead as they claimed victory in the first set.
  • With a 4–3 lead in the second set, Methodist conceded seven straight points to Southern Virginia. Kills by Tanis and Fowler helped cut the deficit to three, but that was the closest the Monarchs would get as they recorded a hitting percentage of .095 during the set.
  • The Monarchs looked to be over their second–set woes as they captured a 9–3 advantage in the third set. The Knights pulled within one after winning seven of the next nine, but a pair of service aces by Blake O'Brien helped Methodist extend its lead (15–10). Southern Virginia found a second wind, reaching an 18–18 tie before blowing past the Monarchs, who could not stop SVU's momentum in time.
  • Savannah Hovander started the fourth set with a kill and the Monarchs took a 5–4 lead. They would not see the lead again, as the Knights slowly pulled away.
MORE TO IT
  • Methodist had five players record double–digits digs as a result of many long volleys. Blake O'Brien (21), Carlyn Tanis (15), Hannah Hewett (14), Jessie Gober (13), and Jamie Holton (11) all made big defensive contributions.
  • Adding 10 kills to her 15 digs, Tanis recorded the first double–double of her collegiate career. Hewett added 38 assists to her 14 digs, earning her ninth double–double of the season.
  • The Monarchs have struggled against Southern Virginia since the Knights entered the USA South. Methodist is 0–8 versus SVU since 2021 and has lost 24 of 31 sets.
