THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Hood, 7–6
Records: Methodist 4-1, Hood 0-3
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Two singles in the bottom of the first inning put Methodist on the board first, as Caleb Rogers batted in Brandon Mauger. The Monarchs proceeded to load the bases but were unable to bring any more runs in during the inning.
- Methodist added three more in the third, with Rogers bringing in Jackson Deal this time, followed by back–to–back RBI bunts from Blake Freeman and Caleb Greene.
- After giving up just one hit through the first three innings, Presley Patterson ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up a pair of two–run homers. When Brandon Humphreys entered in his place, the Blazers promptly hit a third homerun to go ahead, 5–4. In the sixth inning, they tacked on one more run to go up by two.
- Chase Carroll shoved from the mound in the eighth and the ninth, keeping Methodist within striking distance of Hood. After recording just one hit from the fourth inning to the eighth inning, the Monarchs came up clutch in the ninth when Tristen Melvin and Freeman began the frame with back–to–back doubles, scoring one run.
- With runners on first and second and with no outs, Joey Sweeney laid a bunt down the third base line. The third baseman's errant throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, making Sweeney safe at first. While the Blazers were expressing displeasure for the call, the Monarchs continued to run the bases, with Greene advancing to third and Freeman crossing home to tie the game at 6–6. Still with no outs and the winning run 90 feet away, Justin Blunt became the hero when he hit a chopper to first base that allowed Greene to slide safely into home.
STAT FACTS
- Josh Plisko and Carroll both performed well on the hill. Plisko recorded three strikeouts with no walks while conceding no runs on just three hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Carroll entered after Plisko for the last two innings, earning one strikeout and allowing no runs in route to his first win of 2025.
- Rogers and Melvin were the only two Monarchs to record a multi–hit game, both batting 2–for–4 on the afternoon.
- The Monarchs drew eight walks, led by Banks Hartman who reached base on balls twice. Methodist also finished with just two strikeouts, compared to the Blazers who were struck out by Methodist pitchers 11 times.
