Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Matthew Shealy

Methodist Falls by Five at Goucher

TOWSON, Md.  Playing a second consecutive road game to start the season, the Methodist men's lacrosse team traveled north to take on the Goucher College Gophers for a fourth–straight year. The Monarchs were first to score but soon fell behind and were unable to reclaim the lead, ultimately losing by five goals.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Goucher def. Methodist, 14–9
Records: Methodist 0-2, Goucher 1-0
Location: Beldon Field; Towson, Maryland

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Moore netted the first goal of the game after receiving a pass from J.R. Newman. The Gophers spent the next six minutes on a three–goal run, which the Monarchs had no answer for until Cy Horner scored with four seconds remaining in the first quarter (with an assist from Logan Florio).
  • Two quick scores for Goucher to start the second period were matched by a pair of goals for the Monarchs, coming from Jack Murray and LJ Oby who pulled their team back within one score. However, Methodist was shutout for the remainder of the quarter while the home team piled on four more scores, spreading the gap to five goals.
  • With his team trailing 9–4, Jay Legg produced back–to–back goals. The Monarchs played a sound defensive quarter, holding the Gophers scoreless for nearly 14 minutes before finally allowing one goal.
  • Methodist entered the fourth quarter facing a 10–6 deficit. Although it proved to be their highest–scoring frame, scores by Moore, Horner and Oby were not enough to overcome the difference.
FAST FACTS
  • Legg, a freshman, now boasts back–to–back multi–goal performances to begin his Methodist career, having scored two goals in each contest thus far.
  • Sophomore Graham Clausen performance well in the circle, taking the majority of faceoffs for the Monarchs.
