THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Virginia Wesleyan, 10–9
Records: Methodist 2-2, Virginia Wesleyan 1-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following the first quarter, the scoreboard was tied as both sides recorded two goals. Jayy Legg, off a Logan Florio pass, and Ryan Kavounis registered the two Methodist scores.
- Virginia Wesleyan was able to take a 4–2 lead in the second quarter before RJ Breeden passed the ball off to Cy Horner, who found the back cage for the Monarch's third goal.
- Kavounis opened up the scoring in the third quarter with his second goal of the contest to even the scoreboard at 4–4, with Florio getting the assist on the play. A goal from J.R. Newman briefly gave Methodist the lead again until Ben Andrews scored for the Marlins to tie it at five all.
- The Monarchs reclaimed the advantage once more after Kavounis, Jacob Burnette, and Legg each scored a goal, putting Methodist in front 8–5. A last-second goal by Maddox Coelho would bring Virginia Wesleyan within two heading into the fourth quarter.
- In the fourth, the Marlins outscored the Monarchs three to one but were unable to tie or take the lead from Methodist. After back-to-back Virginia Wesleyan goals to cut the deficit to one, 9–8, Kavounis came up with a huge goal for the Monarchs to put his team up by two. The Marlins did trim the score back down to one, but the Methodist defense was able to prevent any more goals for the remaining four and a half minutes to get the win.
