Monarchs Stumble at Home Against the Broncos

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University men's lacrosse took on the visiting Broncos of SUNY Delhi on Wednesday evening at Monarch Stadium, and after the Monarchs claimed an early edge, SUNY Delhi stormed back to pick up a 9–4 victory.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: SUNY Delhi def. Methodist, 9–4
Records: Methodist 2-3, SUNY Delhi 2-0
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's Logan Florio got the scoring started after receiving a pass from Cy Horner, putting the Monarchs in front 1–0. The next two goals were then scored by SUNY Delhi, including a goal with one second remaining in the opening quarter.
  • In the second quarter, Nate Moore of Methodist registered the first two goals of the new period. A couple of minutes into the quarter, Jay Legg found a cutting Moore to tie the game, and then, with four minutes left, Moore struck again to give the lead back to the Monarchs 3–2. This would be the last time Methodist would have the advantage in the contest, as the Broncos scored seven consecutive goals.
  • SUNY Delhi scored three before halftime to put them in front 5–3; then the Broncos recorded four more goals in the second half, three in the third quarter and one in the fourth.
  • After being held to zero goals for the majority of the second half, RJ Breeden snapped Methodist's scoring drought with a late fourth-quarter goal off a feed from Moore.
FAST FACTS
  • Moore paced the Monarchs' offense as he had two goals and one assist.
  • Ten different Methodist players recorded multiple ground balls, with Calvin Flippin and Ethan Jahr leading the team with four.
  • This game was low-scoring due to the fact both teams were turning the ball over. A total of 69 turnovers were committed by the two teams combined, 33 for SUNY Delhi and 36 for Methodist.
UP NEXT
With the current homestand coming to a close, Methodist will host Averett University on Saturday, March 1, in another non-conference game. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
