Methodist Blows by Averett at Home

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University men's lacrosse hosted Averett University in a non-conference contest on a beautiful sunny Saturday. The Monarchs cruised to a 14–4 victory over the Cougars at Monarch Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first seven goals of the game were all scored by Methodist, as the Monarchs tallied six in the first quarter and the opening goal in the second. Senior Cy Horner and freshman Jay Legg each recorded two goals, along with Nate Moore, J.R. Newman, and RJ Breeden chipping in a goal as well.
  • Averett recorded its first goal, with 10:57 left in the second quarter, on a feed from Dawson Hobbs to Brayton Powers. Before halftime, Methodist scored additional goals from Newman, Legg, and Owen Andrews to extend the lead to 10–1.
  • After RJ Breeden and Horner of the Monarchs pushed the scoreboard to 12–1 in the third quarter, Tigran Ceesay registered another goal for the Cougars. Each side would record two more goals before time expired, with Noah Hewett scoring his first two collegiate goals for Methodist.
FAST FACTS
  • Horner and Legg paced the Monarchs' offense with three goals apiece. Breeden, Hewett, and Newman were other Methodist players to have multi-goal games.
  • Ethan Jahr, Christian Brown, and Blake Tucker all saw time in the cage for the Monarchs. Jahr played the entire first half, and he got the win after making four saves while allowing one goal. Brown and Tucker each played a quarter with Brown registering three saves, while Tucker made one save and allowed three goals.
  • As a team, Methodist recorded a season-high 67 shots, with 34 on target. The Monarchs also picked up a season-high 51 ground balls, as sophomore Graham Clausen led the way with a game-high seven.

Methodist now embarks on a three-game road trip, starting with a contest against Oglethorpe University on Wednesday, March 12. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 6 PM.
