Methodist Routs Oglethorpe 19-8 on the Road

ATLANTA, Ga.  Following an 11-day layover, Methodist University men's lacrosse returned to action with a road non-conference game at Oglethorpe University. The contest was close after one quarter of play, but then, the Monarchs outscored the Stormy Petrels the rest of the way, as they won 19–8 on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Nate Moore recorded the first goal of the game for Methodist, Michael Fox and Israel Pendleton-Moore scored the next two goals to give Oglethorpe a 2–1 lead. A couple of quick scores by the freshmen duo of Jay Legg and Logan Florio put the Monarchs back in front, then an additional goal from Moore made it a 4–2 difference. The Stormy Petrels' deficit was cut in half with a goal by Joshua Tamarkin and it nearly stayed a one-goal difference heading into the next quarter, until Florio of Methodist found the back of the cage with three seconds remaining in the opening period.
  • The Monarchs turned up the offense in the second quarter as they outscored Oglethorpe 6-2. The stanza started with RJ Breeden (2) and Cy Horner (1) registered three straight goals for Methodist before Dwayne Taylor snapped the Stormy Petrel's scoring drought with a goal, making the score 8–4. In the last eight minutes until halftime, Ryan Kavounis, Legg, and Horner each recorded a goal for the Monarchs, while Oglethorpe scored one, to extend their lead to 11–5.
  • Following an exchanged of goals, with Legg scoring his third for Methodist, the Monarchs would be the only team to score again in the third quarter, as they rattled off four consecutive goals and took a 16–6 advantage. It began with freshman Nick Spinola, who recorded his first collegiate goal, followed by J.R. Newman, who tallied two of the next three, with Florio scoring the other goal.
  • Like the previous three quarters, Methodist outscored the Stormy Petrels 3-2 in the fourth. All three Monarchs goals were scored by senior Matt Bentz.
