ROME, Ga. Methodist student–athletes were once again prevalent among the latest batch of USA South Athletes of the Week, which were announced by the league on Monday along with the Golfer of the Week honors released on Wednesday.
Earning Baseball Pitcher of the Week status and the Rookie Pitcher of the Week title,
Ian Swanson continues to dominate from the mound in his freshman campaign. The right–hander tossed seven innings in his lone start versus Piedmont University, totaling five strikeouts while conceding just four hits, one walk and one unearned run.
Methodist swept the men's tennis honors following a 7–0 match win against conference foe Mary Baldwin University.
Matthew Hurley was named Player of the Week for his win (6–0, 6–1) in No. 1 singles. Hurley and teammate Decklan Rayer also earned the title of Doubles Team of the Week for their 6–0 sweep in No. 1 doubles, while
Ethan Carlyle was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week after earning a win in No. 4 singles (6–0, 6–0) and a 6–0 sweep in No. 3 doubles with his partner
Cameron Roth.
The Methodist women's tennis team also defeated Mary Baldwin University during their only match of the week, leading to a pair of honorees.
Emma Hulicki earned a win (6–3, 6–1) in the top singles match, garnering the Player of the Week title. Hulicki and
Caitlin Tihanovich also received the Doubles Team of the Week honor for their 6–0 sweep in the No. 1 doubles match.
Following her best game to date in the green and gold,
Kaitlyn Coleman was named Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week. The graduate student attacker amassed seven goals in her team's 19–3 victory over Southern Virginia University in the team's first USA South match of the season. She added three draw controls and one ground ball during the win.
Claiming the Men's Golfer of the Week title for the second week in a row,
Chase Walts won the medalist honors at the Tiger Invitational on Tuesday after shooting 10 strokes under par across the two–round event. The senior helped push the Monarchs to the top spot on the leaderboard, where they finished at nine–under par, which was 11 strokes ahead of the next best team.
