Monarchs Win First Battle With Greensboro

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Back at home to being the second USA South series of the season, the Methodist baseball team evaded a loss to Greensboro College on Saturday in a game that saw the score tied twice with three lead changes. The Monarchs played from behind early but caught fire in the seventh inning to ensure a victory over the Pride.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Greensboro, 12–9
Records: Methodist 15-6 (4–0 USA South), Greensboro 12-8 (3–1 USA South)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Greensboro put two runs on the board in the top of the first, but the Monarchs returned fire with a four piece in the next frame. Brandon Mauger and Caleb Rogers each recorded an RBI, while Tristen Melvin added one by way of a solo home run.
  • Luis Berini answered with a two–out, three–run jack to right field in the second inning, allowing his team to retake the lead with a 5–4 advantage. The teams each scored one run in the third inning; for the Monarchs, it was Banks Engle whose triple dropped just out of the right fielder's reach, sending Rogers across home. Engle's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning brought the tying run across the plate, making the score 6–6.
  • A big seventh–inning surge by the Monarchs gave them a five–run edge, which was ultimately enough to get the job done. One more run in the eighth made the score 12–6, and though the Pride scored three in the ninth, their rally came to a screeching halt when Methodist called upon Chase Carroll to get the final two necessary outs.
STAT FACTS
  • The "meat" of the Methodist batting order pulled its weight on Saturday, with batters No. 5–8 in the lineup combining for 12 hits in 17 at–bats. Melvin batted 3–for–5 with one RBI and three runs scored, Austin Rinzel went 3–for–4 while scoring on three occasions, Rogers finished 4–for–4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Engle ended the outing having gone 2–for–4 with one run scored and a game–high four RBIs.
  • The Monarchs claimed seven stolen bases on the afternoon. Methodist is 6–1 this season in games where the Monarchs steal at least five bases.
  • After a shaky start, Ian Swanson settled down and lasted seven total innings on the mound for Methodist. The freshman conceded five hits while striking out three batters, earning the win to improve his pitching record to 3–0.
