ROME, Ga. Excelling on their respective fields and courts, five Methodist student–athletes were honored as USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Emma Neeley from the softball team,
Jay Legg from the men's lacrosse team, and
Matthew Hurley,
Wills Belser and
Harry Crokam from the men's tennis team were all recognized for their standout performances over the previous week.
Neeley was named Softball Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete–game shutout against conference foe Mary Baldwin University on Saturday. In seven full innings of work, she conceded just four hits with one walk while striking out three batters.
After a career–high five goals scored against Greensboro College on Saturday, Legg earned the title of Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week. In two games last week, the freshman totaled eight points, combining three assists with his five–goal game. He also collected four ground balls.
For the second time this season, Hurley garnered Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors following a week in which he went 3–0 at the No. 1 singles position. In matches against non–conference opponents Johnson C. Smith University, Johnson & Wales University (N.C.) and Roanoke College, the junior also went 3–0 at the No. 2 doubles spot with Australian counterpart
Decklan Rayner.
Claiming three victories at the No. 1 doubles spot,
Wills Belser and
Harry Crokam were named the Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week. They're the second Methodist duo to receive the honor this season, joining Hurley and Rayner. Belser and Crokam defeated Johnson C. Smith's top doubles team 6–2, then bested Johnson & Wales' No. 1 duo 6–1 before rounding out the weekend with a 6–3 win over the top pair from Roanoke.
