ROME, Ga. Seven Monarchs were recognized in the latest round of USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday, including two rookies and numerous repeat award recipients.
Earning the Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week crown for the fourth time,
Ian Swanson tossed 6.2 innings versus Mary Baldwin University over the weekend, dealing seven strikeouts. The freshman earned no decision despite allowing zero earned runs and exiting the game with a 7–1 lead. He conceded two unearned runs on three hits and issued just one walk.
For the third time in his freshman campaign,
Jay Legg has been named the Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week following an eight–goal, three–assist week. The attackman scored three times and logged two assists versus William Peace University while totaling a career–high five ground balls. He matched his career high of five goals against LaGrange College, adding one assist and two ground balls.
Kennedy Martin was also recognized for the third time this season, claiming the title of Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. The senior tallied nine draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers in Methodist's lone game last week against Pfeiffer University. She also scored two goals and contributed one assist in the 23–0 shutout victory.
Earning his third honor of the spring,
Matthew Hurley was named Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his three–win week at the No. 1 singles spot. Defeating opponents from Guilford College, Montreat College and USA South foe Pfeiffer, he teamed with
Decklan Rayner in doubles matches for a 3–0 record at the No. 2 spot.
For the second time this month,
Emma Hulicki has garnered Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors while also receiving recognition for playing on the Doubles Team of the Week. Facing an opponent from Meredith College, Hulicki claimed a win in the No. 1 singles spot. She was joined by
Annabelle Subirats in No. 1 doubles, and the duo claimed a 6–3 victory over the Avenging Angels, earning Doubles Team of the Week status.
David Dennis collected Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors after competing in two events at the Livingstone Blue Bear Invitational on Saturday. The sophomore recorded a personal–best mark in the long jump, leaping 6.81 meters (which ranks 22nd in Division III). He also recorded a distance of 12.84 meters in the triple jump.
