Monarchs Outpaced by Piedmont on Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Following Friday's low–scoring affair versus Piedmont University, the Methodist baseball team combined with the Lions for more than twice as many runs on Saturday. The Monarchs ultimately dropped the second game of the series, losing by three runs.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Piedmont def. Methodist, 9–6
Records: Methodist 9-5, Piedmont 9-4
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Methodist offense had an electric start, turning four hits into three runs. Blake Freeman doubled down the right–field line to bring home the first run, then Tristen Melvin (sac fly) and Austin Rinzel (single) each recorded an RBI.
  • After going three up, three down in the first inning, Piedmont's batters came out with vengeance to start the second. The Lions produced five hits and five runs — four of which were unearned. In the next inning, a leadoff walk followed by a Jack Ryan home run put Piedmont ahead 7–3.
  • Taking advantage of a throwing error by Piedmont's pitcher, the Monarchs responded with a run in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Caleb Rogers and Banks Engle led the frame off with back–to–back hits, allowing Jackson Kuhn and Jackson Deal the chance to each bat one runner in, pulling Methodist within one (7–6).
  • A Carter Few RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning gave Piedmont a two–run edge. The Lions added one more to their total in the seventh, and the Monarchs had no answer, tallying just two hits across the final four innings.
STAT FACTS
  • Six runs are the most Methodist has scored in a loss this season. It's just the second time in which the team has lost despite recorded 10 or more hits.
  • Methodist pitchers combined for eight strikeouts. Brandon Humphreys led the way with three Ks.
