FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Down two runs after the top of the tenth inning, the Methodist baseball team pulled off an incredible walk–off victory over Piedmont University on Sunday afternoon, rallying to score three runs after a leadoff strikeout to begin the bottom of the tenth inning. The Monarchs finished the series with two wins out of three games versus the Lions.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Piedmont, 11–10
Records: Methodist 10-5, Piedmont 9-5
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, both teams put up four runs in the second. For the Methodist offense, all four were unearned. The Lions added one in the fourth, and the Monarchs matched with one in the fifth, courtesy of a Banks Engle RBI bunt single.
- An RBI bunt single by Austin Rinzel in the sixth drove in Methodist's sixth run of the game, then two unearned runs put the Monarchs ahead 8–5.
- Piedmont immediately answered with three runs in the seventh. Chase Carroll kept the Lions scoreless in the eighth and the ninth, while the Monarchs struck out five times in six at–bats.
- The Monarchs dug a hole in the top of the tenth, conceding two runs. The hole became deeper when Brandon Mauger struck out to start the final frame. A Banks Hartman hit–by–pitch, a Blake Freeman single, and a Tristen Melvin walk suddenly gave Methodist a prime opportunity with bases loaded.
- Austin Rinzel singled to bring home one run, then a throwing error allowed the tying run to score. With Rinzel on third base, Caleb Rogers recorded his first hit of the day, bringing in the winning run.
STAT FACTS
- Rinzel finished the game 3–for–6 with two RBIs and four runs scored, including the game–winning run.
- Piedmont amassed seven errors on the outing, contributing towards eight unearned runs for Methodist.
- 3.2 innings are the most Carroll has pitched in a single game since his sophomore season (2023), when he pitched the same amount at William Peace University (3/19/2023).
