Methodist Drops Mid-Week Affair to Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  On Tuesday afternoon, Methodist University baseball faced non-conference opponent Guilford College on the road, and the Quakers capitalized on a five-run seventh inning to defeat the Monarchs 9–3 at McBane Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score:
Guilford def. Methodist 9–3
Records: Methodist 18-9, Guilford 15-8
Location: McBane Field; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Guilford was held in check by Methodist through the first four innings, as the Quakers only recorded one hit off the Monarchs' starter Jackson Kuhn. Then, in the fifth, Guilford broke the scoreless tie with a run. After Grayson Tudor led the inning off with a base hit and was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt, Rylan drove him in on a single back up the middle.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Monarchs returned the favor, and then some, by scoring their first two runs of the contest. Like the Quakers in the last half inning, Methodist's Brandon Mauger started the sixth with a hit before advancing to second on a sac bunt by Austin Rinzel. Following a Guilford miscue to allow runners on the corners, Blake Freeman had an RBI single to left field to score Mauger from third. The next batter, Caleb Rogers, then registered a sacrifice fly to plate the second Monarch run.
  • Methodist's lead would not last a full inning, as the Quakers responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases when Guilford's Aaron Williams stepped up to the box, and he delivered the tying and go-ahead runs on a 2-RBI single.
  • The Quakers put the game out of reach in the seventh inning as they scored an additional five runs, taking an 8–2 advantage.
  • Both teams added one more run to their respective totals in the eighth, as Freeman came around to score for the Monarchs. He smacked a double into the right-center gap before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Rogers then brought him in on an RBI groundout.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Heading into this contest, Freeman was going through a little bit of a slump as he hadn't registered a multi-hit game since March 12. Today, Freeman led the team with three hits.
  • Rogers has been an RBI machine for Methodist. In nine out of the last 11 games, he has recorded at least one RBI, including seven multi-RBI performances. Rogers now leads the Monarchs with 27 this season.
  • Guilford benefitted from the amount of free passes Methodist surrendered, as the Quakers drew ten walks while the Monarchs only worked two.
