Methodist Breaks Three Program Records on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In the 30–3 USA South win against Brevard College, Methodist University men's lacrosse set three new school records in goals (30), points (42), and ground balls (69) at Monarch Stadium.
 
After the game, Methodist honored its six graduating seniors: Cy Horner, Hudson James, Jack Murray, J.R. Newman, Xavier Powers, and Abe Zwiefka.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist took a commanding 10–1 lead in the first quarter. After scoring the first three goals, Brevard got on the scoreboard with its opening goal before the Monarchs scored another seven. In that period, RJ Breeden led the way with three goals, while Matt Bentz and Jay Legg each scored twice.
  • The second quarter began with the two teams exchanging goals, followed by Methodist tallying the next ten goals to take a 21–2 halftime advantage. Among the goal scorers was senior Cy Horner, who tallied three goals, including the 100th goal in his Monarch career.
  • During the second half, Methodist outscored the Tornados 9-1, scoring three in the third quarter and six in the fourth.
FAST FACTS
  • Seven Monarchs finished with multi-goal performances, including three with a four-goal game; Bentz, Legg, and Horner.
  • Of the 40 Brevard turnovers, Methodist was responsible for 21 of them. Forcing the most turnovers was senior Calvin Flippin, who had a career-high four caused turnovers.
  • For the second time this season, the Monarchs registered 60+ ground balls. Back at Oglethorpe, Methodist secured 63 ground balls.
  • All five Monarch goalies saw time in the cage in the contest. Normal starter Ethan Jahr started the contest and played the entire first quarter before Blake Tucker relieved him and played the second quarter. Freshman Ryan Daly then took over in the third quarter while the other rookies, Skyler Swanson and Christian Brown, split time in the fourth.

Methodist goes on the road to conclude the regular season, as the Monarchs travel to Southern Virginia University on Saturday, April 19. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 2 PM.
