Methodist Falls by Two Runs in Rocky Mount

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Matched up with last season's USA South champion, the Methodist baseball team suffered a two–run loss on Saturday, falling at North Carolina Wesleyan University by a score of 7–5. The Monarchs possessed the lead at three separate times during the ballgame but ultimately came up just shy of victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tristen Melvin got the scoring started with an RBI triple in the first frame of the game, bringing home Austin Rinzel. In the next half inning, the Battling Bishops responded with an RBI triple of their own.
  • Methodist added two runs to its total in the third inning with RBIs by Melvin and Blake Freeman. North Carolina Wesleyan not only matched that but took a 4–3 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the third.
  • Two full scoreless innings went by before Justin Blunt doubled down the left–field line in the sixth inning, scoring Caleb Rogers from second base. Blunt scored later in the inning, giving Methodist control again with a 5–4 advantage.
  • The bottom of the eighth was not kind to the Monarchs, with the Battling Bishops scoring three runs. Methodist was unable to answer in the ninth, leading to the two–run loss.
STAT FACTS
  • Melvin led the team with three hits and two RBIs, batting 3–for–4 and scoring one run. Caleb Rogers, Parker Evans and Brandon Mauger all recorded two hits each.
  • The Monarchs recorded at least one hit per inning for the first six innings, then were unable produce a base runner in the seventh or eighth.

The Monarchs face North Carolina Wesleyan twice on Sunday with the first game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
