Monarchs Take One Versus Battling Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  After falling in the first of two games against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Sunday, the Methodist baseball team avoided a weekend series sweep by claiming a 10–4 victory in the second game of the day's doubleheader. The Monarchs utilized a six–run eighth inning to surpass the Battling Bishops.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • A two–run shot in the bottom of the first inning gave the Battling Bishops the early advantage, but an RBI by Caleb Rogers in the second and another in the fourth tied the ballgame. In the bottom of the sixth, another long ball gave the home team a 3–2 edge.
  • Methodist tied the game again with a sacrifice fly by Tristen Melvin in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, the Monarchs conceded nine runs on eight hits, exhausting four pitchers during the frame.
  • Ian Swanson went 5.1 innings on the mound for Methodist, striking out a career–high eight batters in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Methodist faced an early deficit after giving up three runs in the bottom of the first. The Monarchs responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third, with Parker Evans and Blake Freeman crossing home to make the score 3–2.
  • In the top of the fifth, Melvin batted in a run to tie the score at 3–3, just as he had in Sunday's first contest. North Carolina Wesleyan produced a walk and two consecutive hits to bring a run home in the bottom of the fifth, claiming a 4–3 lead.
  • Erupting for six runs in the eighth inning, the Monarchs compiled four hits, one walk and one hit–by–pitch while also using a defensive error to their advantage. Brandon Mauger blasted a two–run homer to start the rally, and other RBIs were credited to Israel Ortiz, Freeman and Rogers.
  • In the ninth, Jackson Deal scored on a wild pitch to add one more insurance run to the total.
STAT FACTS
  • Jackson Kuhn batted 1–for–3 with a walk in Sunday's first game, then pitched the final four innings of game two to earn the win. He tossed five strikeouts while issuing just one walk and allowing only one hit. He followed Presley Patterson, who fanned six batters across five innings of work.
  • Melvin was the lone Monarch to log multiple hits in both games. He batted 4–for–8 on the day with two runs and two RBIs.
UP NEXT
Methodist is at home on Friday, April 18 for the first of three games against Pfeiffer University. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday.
