Methodist Offense Erupts for 40 Runs in Dominant Sweep Over Southern Virginia

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  With a trip to the USA South championship series on the line, top-seeded Methodist University baseball easily advanced following a pair of seven-inning run-rule victories against fourth-seeded Southern Virginia University on Friday, winning Game One 22–7 before claiming an 18–4 win in Game Two at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 22–7 (7 Inn.); Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 18–4 (7 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 30-13, Southern Virginia 15-25
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field, Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • The Knights jumped on the Monarchs' starting pitcher in the first two innings, tagging him for eight hits, including two home runs, to take an early 5–2 lead. The opening two runs for Methodist came in first, as Blake Freeman and Banks Engle had the RBIs.
  • All the momentum appeared to be on Southern Virginia's side until the Monarchs flipped the script and posted a seven-run third inning. The first seven batters of the inning all reached base on either a base hit or a walk, and in the process, Methodist scored six runs to take an 8–5 lead. Caleb Roger was the only Monarch to bat twice and record a hit both times, with his second being an RBI single that registered the ninth Methodist run.
  • In the fourth inning, Jackson Deal had an RBI double that allowed Parker Evan to score the tenth Monarch run.
  • Methodist had another monster inning in the fifth, scoring eight runs. Similarly, to the third, the first ten batters in the inning reached base safely as the score ballooned to 18–5. Five different Monarchs recorded an RBI in the inning, including Austin Rinzel and Banks Hartman, who each had two.
  • The Knights registered their final two runs in the sixth inning, benefiting from a couple of Methodist miscues. After back-to-back walks, the Monarchs attempted to turn a double play, but during the back half of the play, the errant throw sailed past first base, allowing one run to score. Then, a fielding error put two runners on base for SVU, and Mitch Smith stepped up to record an RBI single, making it 18–7.
  • Methodist got those runs back, and then some, during its a-bats in the sixth, scoring four additional runs. Following two walks and a single to load the bases, Israel Ortiz entered the game as a pinch-hitter and had himself an RBI base hit. Also in the inning, Deal (fielder's choice), Brandon Mauger (double), and Tristen Melvin (ground out) registered RBIs as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • It was a different start in Game Two, with the Monarchs striking first and often, scoring eight runs in the first three innings. In the opening frame, Methodist scored two of its three runs on Southern Virginia errors, with Freeman recording the lone RBI in the inning.
  • The second inning saw Methodist tally four more runs (two on base hits, one on a ground out, and one on an error), followed by Melvin making it 8–0 in the third inning, on an RBI single.
  • All of the Knights' runs came in the fourth, as they scored the same number as the inning number. After a walk and a single, Marcelino Leonardo Jr. advances the runners one base with a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back base hits by David Hunley and Ryan Farris plated the first two Southern Virginia runs, then Zack Geersten doubled his team's score on a rare 2-RBI sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit down to 8–4.
  • A six-run fourth inning by the Monarchs pushed the lead to 14–6, highlighted by Freeman, who had a 3-RBI double.
  • Methodist finished scoring in Game Two with four total runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
STAT FACTS
  • The Monarch offense was on a different level today, recording 40 runs on 37 hits and registering 35 RBI.
  • This is the second time this season Methodist has recorded 20+ runs in a single game, the first at home.
  • On the day, Mauger and Freeman each recorded a career-high four hits in one of the games, with Mauger's doing so in the first game, while Freeman's performance came in the second game.
  • Evans, who was Methodist's starting catcher in both games, was an on-base magnet the entire day. After drawing a walk all four times he stepped into the box in Game One, he went 2-for-3 with an additional walk in Game Two.
  • Pitching in relief, Anthony Sarbanes (3.1 innings) and Jackson Kuhn (2.1) were credited with the victories.
