Monarchs Rally to Defeat Piedmont, Advance to USA South Men's Lacrosse Championship

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  For just the second time in program history, the Methodist men's lacrosse team has earned a spot in the USA South Tournament Championship. Taking on No. 2–seeded Piedmont University, the No. 3–seeded Monarchs came from behind on Thursday, outscoring the Lions 6–1 over the final 20 minutes in route to a 9–8 victory in the semifinal round of the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Defense prevailed in the first quarter as both teams scored just one goal each. After two goals by the Lions to start the second period, Nate Moore and Ryan Kavounis scored back–to–back goals to tie the score at 3–3.
  • With the Monarchs up a man in the final two minutes of the first half, a turnover led to a goal for Piedmont with 32 seconds left before the break.
  • The Lions scored three goals within the first five minutes of the second half, surging to a 7–3 advantage.
  • With Methodist down by four, Jacob Burnette and Jay Legg scored the final two goals of the third quarter to cut the difference to two. Then, a pair of scores by RJ Breeden inside the first six minutes of the fourth period tied the game at 7–7. With under nine minutes remaining, Cy Horner punched one into the back of the net to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game.
  • Methodist conceded a game–tying goal with just over five minutes left to play. With the score tied at 8–8, the Monarchs found themselves with an opportunity to score inside the final two minutes, and head coach Ryan McKay called a timeout to strategize with his offense.
  • The ball ended up with Legg, and after an initial miss, he scored the go–ahead goal with 25 seconds left on the clock. A faceoff win recorded by Graham Clausen sealed the victory as the Monarchs celebrated under the lights of Lefko–Mills Field.
FAST FACTS
  • Horner recorded the only two assists of the game, with 15 of the 17 goals coming with no assist.
  • The Monarchs attempted 45 shots compared to 36 by the Lions.
  • Graham Clausen finished 14–for–20 on faceoffs.
  • Methodist will play in the USA South Tournament Championship for the first time since 2018. That year, the Monarchs were also the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 2 seed Piedmont by a score of 10–9 in overtime during the semifinals.
UP NEXT
Methodist will compete in the USA South Tournament Championship in Misenheimer on Saturday at noon, taking on top–seeded Pfeiffer University. The Monarchs are seeking their first–ever USA South Tournament title and first–ever victory over the Falcons.
