Monarchs Secure Shutout Victory in Season Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Facing Johnson & Wales University (Charlotte), the Methodist men's soccer team made a strong statement on Friday evening, starting the 2025 season with a 2–0 triumph. It's the team's first win over the Wildcats since 2006.

Leading the Monarchs offensively, Steven Floyd tallied an assist and a goal during the match.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist defeats Johnson & Wales, 2-0
Records: Methodist 1-0-0, Johnson & Wales 0-1-0
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 10 minutes of play were low on action, with Floyd being the first player to record a shot attempt in the 11th minute. After a couple of wide strikes by Floyd, he managed to thread the ball between the legs of a defender and find the foot of Carson Stretz, who punched in the squad's first score of the season during the 14th minute.
  • The Monarch defense, anchored by junior Garrett Panos, saw four newcomers in the starting lineup. Sophomore transfer Lucas Bender along with freshmen Nicholas Carter, Tanner Bagwell and Axel Grimaldo all played a role in holding the Wildcats to just three shots in the first half. Only one of those shots was on target, and goalkeeper Trey Gohr handily made the save. It was the only time he was truly challenged during his 90 minutes in net, but Gohr did a fine job of confidently directing traffic all night.
  • Two unsuccessful corner kicks left the Monarchs licking their chops for a score in the second half. An opportunity came in the 58th minute when Angel Alarcon provided a pass from just beyond midfield, feeding a perfect ball out in front of a sprinting Floyd. With one bounce, Floyd delivered a strike from the top right corner of the box that whizzed past the keeper and into the back of the net.

NUMBERS
  • This is just the second time in Floyd's collegiate career in which he recorded a goal and an assist in the same match. The other occasion was on Sept. 6, 2023 (just the third game of his freshman season), in a game that the Monarchs defeated Ferrum College 2–0.
  • The game–winning goal by Stretz was just the third goal of his collegiate career. It's his second–ever game–winner.
