Methodist Falls to Guilford in 1–Goal Match

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Riding into Saturday fresh off a Friday night victory, the Methodist men's soccer team suffered a 1–0 defeat against Guilford College on Saturday evening. The Monarchs allowed a goal with one minute remaining in the first half and were unable to produce a response in the second half.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Guilford defeats Methodist, 1-0
Records: Methodist 1-1-0, Guilford 1-1-0
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's defense played physical in the first half, blocking four of the first five shots attempted by the Quakers. On offense, Steven Floyd put forth Methodist's first try in the 22nd minute, heading the ball towards the net off a pass from well beyond the right side of the box. However, the shot wasn't strong enough to get past the Guilford goalkeeper.
  • Camden Handcox lofted a shot towards the frame from outside the left side of the box with five minutes remaining in the first half, but it was saved by the keeper. Just when it looked like the score would be nil–nil at halftime, the Quakers struck. A ball that was passed inside the Methodist defensive zone found its way to the boot of Guilford's Isaac Garbia, who, standing about 10 meters from the frame, saw a path and punted the ball from right to left past Trey Gohr into the net.
  • The Monarchs continued to persist on offense, including Floyd, who forced the Guilford keeper to make two more saves in the second half. Angel Alarcon even attempted a bicycle kick off a throw–in with roughly nine minutes remaining in the contest, and it was once again handled by Guilford's Christopher Kelley. Methodist wouldn't see any more chances to score during the remaining time.
NUMBERS
  • Guilford's goal was the only shot that came near the pipes for the Quakers. Trey Gohr finished the night with no saves, having received significant helped from his back line for most of the outing.
  • Methodist ended the contest with 11 shots, including five on goal. Floyd led the way with all three of his shots testing the Guilford goalkeeper.
